Then, halfway through the fourth circuit, one of the wooden propellers broke and the plane began to lose thrust. The unbalanced propeller began to vibrate violently. The shaking transmitted through the drive chains and frame of the aircraft caused the split propeller to hit a supporting guy wire, causing it to snap. The wire tore out of its fastening and shattered the propeller, while the rudder swivelled to the horizontal and sent the Flyer into a nose dive.
